We last wrote about Donald some four years ago. That was round about the time both he and The Rt Hon Brian Wilson CBE were summarily dispatched from the West Highland Free Press over a very trivial rumpus blown to extraordinary proportions. As we said at the time, the rumpus left a very bad stain on the late editor Ian McCormack's hitherto unblemished cv. We heard Donald had been unwell some time afterwards and wished him a speedy and complete recovery.
Time moves on and, nearly two years ago, we find both Donald and Wilson writing for the same publication, the Stornoway Gazette of all places, Wilson as Editor-in-Chief and Donald as columnist. It has been a great success, transforming the awful mess that former editor Melinda left behind over 15 miserable years to a modern and progressive local newspaper. Lately, however, the Stornoway Gazette has been reverting to Melinda's type and has lost a huge part of its initial appeal. We shall write about the Gazette separately.
Meanwhile, Donald, also, is reverting to type. He should remember that when the only argument left in a prominent churchman's armoury is continually attacking another denomination - in Donald's case the Church of Scotland - then, cerebrally, he's running on empty. Instead of his constant attacks on the Church of Scotland, Donald should be looking inwards towards his own and where there are far greater problems to be addressed.
