At this point in time, and since we have nothing better to do, let's take a quick look at Carloway Estate Trust statistics.
The lands were formally transferred from Carloway Estates Ltd to Carloway Estate Trust on 01 May 2015. The ballot for the buy-out had taken place some time previously.
Of those who voted, 75% were in favour of the buy-out while a very substantial minority of 25% were against. Translated into figures rather than percentages, 254 individuals were for the buy-out while 86 were against. A total of 340 people voted.
The more worrying figure was the very large number of people who did not vote at all. A total of 503 individuals were entitled to vote but only 67% did so. That is the most concerning statistic of all. It means that of the 503 individuals entitled to vote, only 254 voted for the buy-out or, in other words, only 50% of the population were in favour.
That, in our view, was never a proper basis on which to proceed to buy-out. However, big egos mattered much more than cautious common sense and we have been paying the price ever since.
We truly have been sold a pup and - we know it. The unfortunate part is that those responsible refuse to acknowledge it.
