Dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Has Editor Ian at the WHFP been partaking of too much of the demon deoch over the festive period? Something's gone badly wrong with this week's Editorial.
The Boundary Commission for Scotland is, of course, the body statutorily responsible for parliamentary boundaries in Scotland. It is not a body that Ian is particularly happy with and confuses it on two occasions in his Editorial with the Boundaries Commission for Scotland, a non-existent organisation. Error Number 1.
'The Boundary Commission for Scotland', says Ian, 'is the Edinburgh body which devotes itself to the constituencies of both national parliaments and local authorities'. Sadly, no, Ian, and Error Number 2. Since 18 May 2017 the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland is the body responsible for local authority ward boundaries.
'It decides, to give one example, whether you are vote (sic) in Caithness, Sutherland and Ross or neighbouring Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch - or in some entirely new constituency dreamed up by the commissioners'. But, Ian, is that not the way it has always been? Error Number 3.
'The Boundaries Commission for Scotland's .......... immediate function is to examine the boundaries of local authority wards which includes islands'. Sadly, no again, Ian, and Error Number 4. This, as we have pointed out above, is the function of the Local Authority Boundary Commision for Scotland.
We gave up at that point. God knows how many more bourach errors lie in this lengthy diatribe.
