We cannot help but have the utmost reservation about the gross negligence manslaughter (x 95) criminal prosecution of former Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield currently being held at Preston Crown Court. It relates, as we all know, to the Hillsborough Football Disaster some 30 years ago where he was Match Commander.
The prosecution claims that Mr Duckenfield's 'extraordinarily bad failings' were the principal cause of the disaster, as if the Match Commander was acting in a void all on his own. In our view, it is a most startling claim with potentially enormous consequences for us all. A mistake, or error of judgement, at Carloway Cattle Show, or Hebfest, or the National Mod, or any Gala Day that you want to name ........ the list is endless ........ and we're all in trouble.
It is as worrying a criminal prosecution as we can think of. We hope the jury sees sense.
