POLITICIAN OF THE YEAR

We thought that The Herald newspaper had ceased its 'Politician of the Year' awards but we were wrong.  We discovered that this morning when we went into Cromwell Street to select a newspaper from the stands.  We almost puked on seeing the grinning face of The First Minister after being awarded,  yet again, this extremely dubious recognition.

It got worse.  Firstly,  and incomprehensibly, Johann Lamont was voted 'Donald Dewar Debater of the Year'  while our old friend,  Wembley Ken MacAskill,  was even more incomprehensibly awarded 'Political Impact of the Year' and in recognition of his work in forging the country's regional police forces into one monolith! Only the day before,  the Auditor General had mercilessly savaged Wembley Ken's  purported savings of £1.1 billion from the Police Scotland budget!  Truly,  and as they say,  you couldn't make it up!

The chairman of the 'Judging Panel' was one Magnus Llewellin who,  apparently,  is also part-time editor of The Herald.  The obvious inference from this almighty shambles is that Magnus doesn't have much of a clue. If you ask us,  it would have been much more useful for Magnus to have stayed behind at his desk to try and ensure that the howling errors - factual,  grammatical and spelling -  that characterise his newspaper are a thing of the past.

Given its track record,  we would rename these awards 'The Kiss of Death Awards'.  The one thing missing was an award for Angus Brendan.
