Nadhim Zahawi MP is a former - albeit briefly - Chancellor of the Exchequer. He maintains he made a 'careless' error in his tax returns of several million pounds in his own favour. As you do. The taxman, however, maintains that you do not incur a penalty for 'careless' errors as Mr Zahawi alleged. The corollary is that if this was not a 'careless' error it must have been deliberate. Simple.
What concerns us more than anything is why there has been no criminal investigation into Mr Zahawi's tax returns and we strongly criticise His Majesty's Revenue and Customs for that. Such an allegation, if proved, would result in several years in the pokey. That wouldn't go down particularly well as current Chairman of the Tory Party. Compare that scenario with some poor soul who claims a bit more Universal Credit than they are strictly entitled to. The State, in the form of the criminal courts, comes down on them like a ton of bricks.
As always, there is one law for the rich and powerful and another law for the rest of us.
