On Friday afternoon, while doing nothing more dangerous than listening to the wireless, we heard the Chief Constable of Police Scotland, Iain Livingstone, intone his views on Nicola's latest coronavirus regulations. Lord, we thought, has there ever been a pair more thoroughly deserving of one another, he and Nicola?
This weekend, ordered Iain, 'do not hold house parties or gatherings indoors. The police service will take very robust action in that regard, because we know that is particularly dangerous in regards to the spread of the virus. If you've got concerns there is a house party going on somewhere, I would encourage you to contact the police service because it's the right thing to do. You need to identify house parties if they're occurring'. No word at all about outside-of-house parties where most of the trouble in Scotland occurs, particularly in periods of decent weather and where there is little, if any, social distancing when daggers get drawn.
But quite where Iain is going to find the time to bust those parties is anyone's guess. Iain is now seeing 'non coronavirus-related crime returning to levels which are more in line with what we would call business as usual'. It's almost a relief to see policing normals return and so, we are sure, are those unfortunate recipients of the 3,213 Fixed Penalty fines Iain has isued since the coronavirus regulations began together with the 238 unfortunates he's had arrested.
Priorities, priorities, priorities. With this present lot in charge of Police Scotland - or Poileas Alba in its alter ego - it is no longer a case of 'Lord Hear Us' but much more a case of 'Lord Help Us'.
