We continue to take an interest in Carloway Estate Trust for a number of reasons but, principally, its viability as a going concern. We were concerned about its viability long before the beginning and that concern remains. The accounts to 31 March 2018 have now been submitted and we have been able to have a look.
The most striking feature in the accounts is that its trading income for the year is £13,000 or thereabouts, just about the income for two OAPs. That is certainly NOT viable and, without a revenue grant of £26,000 from HIE, Carloway Estate Trust would surely go under. That is not a good indicator for the future and not least because HIE will always be subject to political whim.
The other concern we have always had is that the quite extensive area of the villages of Borrowston, Garenin, Upper Carloway, Park Carloway, Dalmore and Dalbeg - our own area, in fact - were excluded from the Estate, effectively splitting the Carloway Community in two. We are a great believer in unity and we do not like that one little bit. And, in an extraordinary insult to the public, the Trust is now of all things on that scandal-ridden platform known as Facebook!!!!! Where the hell do they get them from?
We would dearly like to be proved wrong but we remain pessimistic.
