We don't order the West Highland Free Press any more for a number of reasons but, occasionally, someone or other makes us aware of something that might be of interest. And so it proved this week.
We haven't the foggiest idea what is going on at Storas Uibhist but, rightly or wrongly, Storas Uibhist gets rather a lot of bad mainstream press. Bad press, however, does not extend to Ian and his merry crew at the WHFP. Ian is most sceptical about the validity of the complaints over Storas Uibhist and favours very much the status quo over criticism or change.
One of the big problems at Storas Uibhist appears to be over 'transparency', or the lack of it, just like here at Carloway Estate Trust. Ian, however, is having none such criticism and refers to the Chief Executive of Storas Uibhist as having 'robustly denied that any information has been withheld from anybody who is qualified by law to receive that information ....... not all business can be conducted in public, and nor should it'. Quite, Ian, quite.
It reminds us of how the old Soviet Union used to conduct its business by diktat of Communist Party bosses. Obviously, Ian is still in his element with such a system but he should be forewarned that change is coming and that soon Storas Uibhist, like all other Community Land Bodies, will be accountable to all under Freedom of Information legislation.
Watch the old ticker, Ian. A bout of apoplexy is not very far away.
