As our two readers know already, we have long been critical of this nonsense called 'Zero Tolerance Policing' which has been tried in various guises and for various reasons by various Chief Constables over the years.
Looking back, we were fiercely critical of a man called Orr when Chief Constable of Strathclyde when he created the madness of breath testing every motorist coming into town at eight o'clock in the morning in the run up to Christmas. There were queues for miles and, eventually, that crazy policy was found to be illegal. We were equally critical of Stephen House in his time as Chief Constable of Strathclyde and his over-zealous policy of locking up for the custody courts as many 'domestic' miscreants as he could possibly find and whether male or female it simply didn't matter.
Now, we are pleased to see that Steve as boss of Police Scotland has seen the error of his ways in at least one regard. He now questions his previous policy of custody, custody, custody and more custody and suggests that, except in the more serious of cases, domestic abuse should be treated outwith the court system. About time too, Steve, and that's applying nothing more than sound, common sense ......... but what about your crazy attitude to prostitution and saunas?
However, whether Steve's political paymasters will go along with him on 'domestics' in this Utopian Scotland of ours is something else altogether.
