LADY CLAIRE AND LORD GODFREY

We have been very lazy of late  but,  as it happens,  there has been little to attract our interest anyway.  However,  that has changed with the latest news about Lady Claire and Lord Godfrey,  our old friends who  are proprietors of the Kinloch Lodge Hotel on Eilean a' Cheo.

Lady Claire and Her Old Man have taken advantage of the season to extend their already-palatial hotel into something even more palatial still.  They financed the operation,  if newspaper reports are to be believed,  with some £500,000 from the Bank of Scotland and some £250,000 from Highlands and Islands Enterprise.  As their daughter,  Isabella,  explained "guests' expectations are constantly increasing"  and this refurbishment was necessary "to continue giving value for money".  At £400 per night bed and breakfast we have to agree.  Anything to keep the plebs out.

While,  no doubt,  banks being banks, the £500,000 will almost certainly be in the form of a loan,  there is no word about the other sum of £250,000 from Highlands and Island Enterprise and whether it is in the form of grant,  loan or equity.  The bigger question,  of course,  is whether HIE should be funding such extravagance with any public money at all.
