As we advised last week, we took The Glasgow Herald from the stalls today for the sole purpose of finding out who the winners were in The Glasgow Herald "Politician of the Year Awards". We paid £1.10 for the privilege, yes, that's right, £1.10.
Quoting from the paper, "Herald and Times Group managing editor Tom Thomson told the awards ceremony : "The Scottish Politician of the Year Awards rightly honour those politicians who have contributed so much to Scottish life over the past year. The Herald is delighted to host what has become a landmark in Scottish political life since it was launched to celebrate the opening of the Scottish Parliament". Indeed, Tom, indeed, but steady on.
In our view, it is a great pity that Mr Thomson took time out to attend this gathering of fifth-raters. Had he elected to stay in his office instead and produce newspapers that we are happy to read, that would have given us here on Loch Roag something to look forward to on a daily basis, even at £1.10 per day. It would also go a very long way to halting the free fall circulation of both The Glasgow Herald and Evening Times and might explain at the same time why The Glasgow Herald is searching for yet another editor.
But, then again, perhaps politicians and journalists thoroughly deserve one another anyway.
