Today, while looking at what the newsagents had to offer, we saw the front page of The Glasgow Herald announcing the forthcoming "prestigious" Scottish Politician of the Year Awards 2012. Our curiosity got the better of us and we forked out £1.10 for the purchase. We wish we had never opened the paper.
Inside, on page 6, we have a grinning photograph of The Wee Man holding aloft the Scottish Politician of the Year Award 2011. On reading further, we were reminded that last year's winner of "The One to Watch" category, "the rising stars of Scottish politics", went to Ruth Davidson, whom we believe has something or other to do with the Scottish Tories nowadays. We then fell asleep, as only The Glasgow Herald can induce.
Many think that The Glasgow Herald is in its death throes and, with nonsense like this, no bloody wonder. Our view has always been that newspapers should stay well away from politicians and keep them at arm's length as, otherwise, they are liable to give an inaccurate and prejudiced view to their readers. That is why we here have long stopped taking The Glasgow Herald which states, proudly, that this "prestigious" event is now in its fourteenth year.
Why, we ponder, isn't there a category for Political Liar of the Year? Or, for that matter, Political Bullshitter of the Year?
