IAN McCORMACK, LONG-SERVING EDITOR, WEST HIGHLAND FREE PRESS

We had intended to comment on Ian's retirement before now but our dilettante attitude to life took precedence so that our intended writing was put on hold.  We now rectify that laziness and mark the occasion with the tribute it deserves.

Ian was editor of the West Highland Free Press for some 44 years and,  in that period,  he has seen them all come and go.  Ian himself is a wonderful wordsmith and that was very apparent not only in his editorial outpourings but also in his intellectual approach to journalism.  Of course,  Ian made some errors,  particularly in his dispatching of both The Reverend Professor and Macuilleam Himself,  but,  overall,  the paper was,  intellectually, sound as a pound.  We hope that will remain.

We know we long took the mickey out of Ian and his paper but,  nevertheless,  we unreservedly wish Ian a long and happy retirement.
