We are now told that the former government-appointed commissioner and Chairman of the Commission, Susan Walker, is not to be replaced by yet another nationalist government appointee parachuted into office by The Scottish Ministers. Instead, the Commission will now function with just 8, rather than 9, commissioners and the commissioners have elected one of their locally (and democratically) elected fellow commissioners as Chairman.
However, we shouldn't read into this that the nationalist government has suddenly become benign. Far from it. They realised that another government appointee to the Commission would be a step too far at this stage but, underneath, we can rest assured that the nationalists are still the same old Stalinists.
