Well, that's it, more than 60,000 Covid infections in the UK yesterday. We are now on our THIRD lockdown within 9 months so that it is a good time to assess what politicians have been up to in that period. It makes for grim reading.
The first thing to say is that politicians UK-wide were negligent in their delay in closing ALL UK Borders until 23 March. Borders should have been closed down at least 4 weeks before they were closed so that the introduction of Covid would have been checked big-style. No one - not a single, solitary soul - should have been allowed to enter the UK from abroad after that without a negative test on arrival here and following another negative test 72 hours previously.
The next big mistake was to relax such Border controls as we had over the summer period when hundreds of thousands of British were allowed to head off to Spain, France and other such destinations and bring with them even more Covid. ALL international flights and ferries should have been cancelled.
Add to the foregoing the grave shortage of Personal Protection Equipment for all manner of frontline workers for which politicians in government are responsible.
The last grave error - and currently the gravest error - was the failure of politicians to contain the spread of Covid in allowing Covid-infected carriers and their contacts to do basically what they wanted without any effective control of their conduct and movements. These people and their contacts should have been isolated as soon as they tested positive and kept well out of harm's way from the rest of the population.
Any breach of confinement by those Covid-carriers, such as intermingling with others or even going out, should have been backed up by the imposition of draconian fines or even imprisonment. Drastic times call for drastic measures and to hell with individual liberties. In that way, had Covid-carriers been forced to stay in isolation under pain of severe penalty, most of the country could have continued as normal. If there is no Covid-carrier about, you're not going to catch Covid. Simple.
There is only one conclusion one can arrive at. Our politicians have been criminally negligent over Covid from the very beginning and, 9 months later, nothing has changed. Had this sort of negligence occurred in any other walk of life, those responsible would all be serving long sentences of imprisonment.
As usual with politicians, one law for them and quite another for the rest of us.
