CHARLES ELPHICKE ex-MP

Yesterday,  former MP Charlie Elphicke was sentenced to 2 years in jail following his conviction for three sexual assaults on two women.  Two of the assaults were 9 years apart.

In our view,  the sentence imposed by Mrs Justice Whipple was not just excessive,  but grossly excessive.  While the allegations were,  undoubtedly,  nasty,  there was nothing to indicate that Mr Elphicke would be a danger to women in the future so that the judge could have easily taken a non-custodial approach to sentencing.  Surely a more correct approach would have been some compensation to the women concerned together with a fine of £20,000 and upwards?

We hope the Appeal Court sees sense.
